Our first morning in Uganda

We have awakened to the sounds of birds, tree frogs, and other noises that we will likely get used to as we acclimate to our surroundings. It is a beautiful morning - the sun is out, it is quite warm and everybody seems to be feeling better after sleeping in the prone position and getting a shower. We were all feeling a bit grimy after 30+ hours of traveling.

Some women we have yet to meet are preparing our breakfast as I speak, while still others are beginning to stir. Today is going to be a "catch our breath" day for the most part. We are going to have an orientation with Tim and Colleen this morning and then Cindy and I are scheduled to go into Kampala for a conference with women and pastors, respectively, while the others begin to pull together the supplies we will need for our trip into the village.

This afternoon we are going to go shopping in Kampala and again, just try to slowly get acclimated to this beautiful new culture.

Thank you all for your prayers for safety. Now please pray for us that we might continue to humbly approach our calling to be here with diligence to live for our Audience of One as we meet and serve the people who will become our new friends and colleagues.

Blessings,

P.Roy

  2. Here are some reflections I just received in an email from Roy:
"All is well here in Uganda. I got to see Moses yesterday when Cindy, Tim and I went to the Pastor's conference. The others stayed back at the complex to organize for our trip to the village and go shopping. I guess Anna was in her glory for the shopping part - that comes as no shock.

While it is still early, Africa is already having an effect on all of us. The number of people in Kampala outnumber the pop. of NY City by 1.5 times. There are people walking everywhere, bicycles and motorcycles all over and the traffic and the way they drive is unbelievable. However, the part that has had the most significant affect is the poverty that we see as we go through neighborhoods, especially the one where the Church of God is, here in Kampala. It breaks your heart to see how people live and what they must do to earn a living. We saw a man with leprosy yesterday begging amidst the traffic jams that we were in. Others went car to car trying to sell their wares. It was sad, but unfortunately it's the reality that we are seeing.

Amidst the poverty, however, the people we are meeting at the Pastor's conference are so full of joy that it puts us to shame. They have nothing and are full of joy, while we have so much and are frustrated that we don't have more. Needless to say, there are many lessons to learn, and changes that need to take place in my heart and in the hearts of others.

Well, there is only one computer and I don't want to hog it, so I should sign off for now..."

It's amazing that they are beginning their Thursday on the other side of the world, and we are ending Wednesday. Our Creator is an awesome God!

It is not an easy thing to confront suffering in such an extreme manner. Thank you for the prayers...keep them coming!
